Alvin’s life after Masterchef

Alvin’s life after Masterchef

While MasterChef contestant Alvin Quah didn鈥檛 win season two of the show, his sense of humour and winning way with a camp quip meant he was a favourite with many viewers.

True to form, the openly gay home cook told Sydney 17c起草社区 he had a cheeky response for one of the more unusual questions he鈥檇 been asked since leaving the show.

鈥淭he weirdest question I鈥檝e been asked is what kitchen utensil I鈥檇 be. I say I鈥檇 be a mortar and pestle, because it鈥檚 all about the pounding,鈥 he laughed.

As with many of MasterChef鈥檚 more popular personalities, Quah鈥檚 time since competing on the show has been filled with public appearances on the celebrity chef circuit.

He was careful to stress that he didn鈥檛 consider himself a culinary expert, though.

鈥淚 joined the show because I鈥檓 a home cooker, and I鈥檓 still a home cooker 鈥 I don鈥檛 have the proper training,鈥 he said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 nothing hoity-toity about my style of cooking.鈥

Quah鈥檚 next appearance will be on Saturday, October 9 as part of the Hunter Valley Semillon and Seafood Festival, where he鈥檒l conduct several seafood cooking demonstrations for budding master chefs.

He said he was eager to capitalise on his appearance on MasterChef, even appearing in women鈥檚 magazine New Idea for a multi-page 鈥楢t Home鈥 spread with his partner Brian.

鈥淲hen I went in the show, I never wanted them to see me as the gay contestant first, because it鈥檚 not about that 鈥 it鈥檚 about food. But I was really pleased with that magazine spread they did 鈥 it showed that audience that [gay people] live normal lives. We could be your next-door neighbour.

鈥淣o one鈥檚 thrown anything at me yet, so it seems to have gone down OK!鈥
