Get your ROCS off for a good cause

ONE of Victoria’s leading university singing groups is joining forces with Queermance, the national literature festival for gay fan fiction and erotica, for a night of cabaret abandon.

Held at the iconic Hare Hole聽in the Melbourne suburb of聽Fitzroy, the night features the vocal talent of Queermance festival director Matthew Lang, as well as聽RMIT Occasional Choral Society (ROCS) veteran Sandra Bogerd, who has written a new song specifically for the event.

ROCS artistic director Geordie Marsh said the event is expected聽to be聽more than the聽average cabaret: 鈥淲e鈥檙e able to sing a much wider range of songs given that we have a choir to back up our soloists for a start.鈥

Organisers have also been tight lipped on the program itself, but they鈥檝e promised songs from cabaret classics to music from computer games all tied together with a dash of queerness, smut and innuendo.

For Lang, the opportunity to work with ROCS was been an exciting new challenge.

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 think I鈥檇 be doing this for a few years at least,鈥 he聽said.

鈥淭hings have happened so quickly since we launched Queermance in March and I鈥檓 very excited that we have so much support in the community.鈥

Speaking about the collaboration between聽ROCS and Queermance, the two men simply shrug.

鈥淲e met at a house party, and now we make music together,” Lang said.

鈥淎wesome music,鈥 Marsh adds.

鈥淎nyone can make music. We make it awesome.鈥
