Trevor Ashley makes directorial debut in Heathers
STAGE star Trevor Ashley has had a busy start to 2016.
Since wrapping up his stint in the Australian production of聽Les Miserables in December, he has been involved in seven live productions. And there are no plans to slow down.
Best known for his star turns in聽Gentleman Prefer Blokes, Diamonds are for Trevor聽and of course his portrayal of the larger-than-life Monsieur Thenadier in聽Les Miserables, Ashley has been described as one of the busiest men in show business and is about to take on a new challenge – directing.
Ashley is聽back in Sydney to take the helm of聽Heathers: The Musical, based on the 1980s film about a terribly cruel clique of high school girls.
“I’m exhausted,” Ashley told聽17c起草社区.
“But at least with directing I don’t have to be up on stage everyday.”
Ashley fell in love with the musical when he saw it in New York and immediately bought the rights to bring聽the show to聽Australia.
“I saw it and just loved the songs. It’s a show that’s funny, but dark and I think there are a lot of people that love the songs from this soundtrack,” he said.
鈥�I鈥檝e always loved the movie聽Heathers. The stage production is quite true to the film, so all that black comedy and satirical fun is in there 鈥� just with a whole lot of terrific music.鈥�
The show had a sold out run last year in Sydney and Melbourne and is coming back to the Opera House for what is sure to be a popular season.
The Sydney cast features award nominated talents including;聽Sydney Theatre Awards nominee Hilary Cole (Dogfight, Miracle City) as Veronica Sawyer, and Helpmann Award nominee Lucy Maunder (Grease, Doctor Zhivago) in the role of queen bee聽Heather听颁丑补苍诲濒别谤.
The film, which starred 80s/90s Hollywood icons like聽Shannen Doherty, Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, was the original聽Mean Girls聽but filled with murder and vengeance.
Ashley said the film came out at a more innocent time before the mass school shootings at Columbine and other places in the US, but now the show’s themes are a lot more real.
Heathers: The Musical聽has a limited run in June at the Opera House and those attending are encouraged to get into their best 80s gear, with scrunchies and padded shoulders galore.
