JULIE Kalceff had a few reasons why she created her web series Starting From… Now!, but one stuck out as quite profound.

鈥淵oung girls growing up and questioning their sexuality sometimes don鈥檛 see themselves on screen,鈥 she said.

鈥淵ou look on screen and they鈥檝e all got boyfriends, and they might think, 鈥榳hat鈥檚 wrong with me?鈥.

鈥淪o, the more representation we have, the less that we鈥檙e the 鈥榦ther鈥 and that there鈥檚 something wrong with us.鈥

It鈥檚 also the reason Kalceff became a screenwriter 鈥 to address the gap in lesbian content in both mainstream and LGBTI-skewed film and TV.

鈥淟esbian content is always a minority,鈥 she told the 17c起草社区, highlighting some of the lead characters in current TV series Orange is the New Black, Wentworth and Grey鈥檚 Anatomy as exceptions.

鈥淓verytime anything comes out it鈥檚 compared to The L-Word, which I think is a problem because that shows there鈥檚 not enough there, not much diversity.鈥

However, with Starting From… Now! already gaining over four聽million views since its debut in March, Kalceff believes this highlights the mainstream film industry鈥檚 need to fund innovative content due to the competition from web series.

鈥淢ainstream media is a business and they want to make money,鈥 she said.

鈥淚f we鈥檝e had over three million views in over eight months, that obviously shows there鈥檚 a demand for it and they need to recognise it.鈥

As for Kalceff herself, her credits include various short films, such as Ex, which screened at 20 LGBTI film festivals. It also won multiple awards, including the prestigious My Queer Career honour at the 2011 Mardi Gras Film Festival.

Starting From… Now! is not her first web series 鈥 she was also the writer/director of 2011鈥檚 The Newtown Girls, which was viewed in over 190 countries.

Kalceff said her newest series鈥 story began as a feature film script around five years ago.

鈥淚 kind of started it from the point of 鈥榳hat sort of things do I want to see鈥 and what I think there鈥檚 not enough of on screen,鈥 she recalled.

鈥淏ut I put it away, and when I was thinking of doing a web series [about three years later] I was thinking of that content so I pulled it back out and reworked and re-shaped it.鈥

As the clich茅 goes, the rest is history.

Filming for season one took place in late 2013, and the first of its six episodes went live online in March this year.

Season two was then dropped online over winter, and the first episode of season three was launched in mid-November.

Kalceff said the first two seasons were self-funded, while the third season was supported through an online crowdfunding campaign in August.

All of her cast and crew are volunteers, including lead actors Bianca Bradey, Sarah de Possesse, Rosie Lourde, and Lauren Orrell.

However, with the lack of significant funding to pay everyone involved, Kalceff expressed frustration at the process required to obtain it.

鈥淭o get funding, and the types of funding, such as for a short film to enter a film festival, there鈥檚 always someone you kind of have to go through,鈥 she said.

Despite these challenges, her experience in creating Starting From… Now! has been a rewarding one.

鈥淭he beauty of web series is that you can just put it online, and if it鈥檚 good and you do the work you can hopefully find an audience,鈥 she said.

鈥淚鈥檓 eternally grateful for people that come on board and give their time and their talent for the series.

鈥淚t鈥檚 really important because it鈥檚 really helped its growth and helped me grow as a director and with my writing, as well.鈥

And what of the viewer feedback?

鈥淸It鈥檚] been great,鈥 Kalceff said, citing the US, then France and Australia as the series鈥 top three countries of viewers.

鈥淥ne of the things that I like the best is that we鈥檙e getting feedback from all over the world, and we鈥檙e getting feedback from people saying 鈥榯here鈥檚 no lesbian content in my country鈥, or 鈥業鈥檓 not able to access lesbian content鈥.

鈥淚t鈥檚 been really important to make it available to people all over the world.鈥

When asked what made Starting From… Now! different to other lesbian-oriented TV shows or web series, Kalceff said it was the fact the characters were not defined by their sexualities.

鈥淭hey don鈥檛 talk about their sexuality,鈥 she said.

鈥淲e鈥檙e very conscious of not wanting to do a series where lesbians are angsty about their sexuality or a coming out story, I feel like that鈥檚 been done. There鈥檚 a place for it, but that鈥檚 not the sort of story I am usually interested in talking about.

鈥淚 wanted a series with characters who weren鈥檛 defined by their sexuality, who were strong, confident women, female protagonists 鈥 who happen to be lesbians 鈥 and the complications in their lives.鈥

About Starting From… Now!

The web series follows the tangled lives of four, strong and independent lesbian women in Sydney.

Season one begins with the naive Steph Fraser, who moves to Sydney to pursue her dream job.

However, as she shares their inner-west home, her life gets complicated as she falls for her childhood friend Kristen’s long-term girlfriend, Darcy.

The story primarily deals with the strain and realistic repercussions that Steph’s move to Sydney puts on her friend and her girlfriend, and one of her colleagues.

Each season has six episodes, and director Julie Kalceff is in the process of writing season four, with season five also in the pipeline.
