I don’t think having children means to grow up. Being grown up does not require starting a family. I just wanted to address that from an earlier comment.

I think the attraction is personal as much as it is a cultural thing.

Kylie had to battle for acceptance early on in her career in the face of plenty of hate and she has triumphed so brilliantly and knows herself so well. I think this kind of journey is what gay men have to go through as well and it resonates with them.

But putting the psycho-babble aside, Kylie’s music is just awesome. It really can be that simple.

How can you not love the woman! I remember the first time I laid my eyes on her she was wearing a cheeky white jumpsuit and shaking her bum left and right. I mean seriously! All I could think about that day was how beautiful she and her music were. It was later in my life however that my true obsession of Kylie began. (I have since learned that as a wee child I’d listen to Locomotion so it maybe was always meant to be). I was in high school when I would hear my idol once again. If you take a look at all the gay icons,/idols over the last 40 years the large majority of them are straight, go figure. As a young child in the 70s I was a huge abba fan. I felt strangely attracted to Agnetha but at the same time I wanted to be her. When my parents were out I would put on my mums platform boots and parade around the lounge room singing their greatest hits. No I didn’t end up being a drag queen nor did I want to. I have never been part of the Kylie obsession but perhaps it’s similar to my youthful Agnetha phase. Most gay men don’t have children. We don’t really have to grow up and take responsibility. We can be perpetual teens forever if we like and part of that is behaving like one when it comes to pop star obsessions.

Just one factual error – Impossible Princess was in 1997, not 1994. That was her second self-titled album ‘Kylie Minogue’.
