Joel Creasey channels inner rock god
鈥淚鈥橵E never written a joke in my life,鈥� Joel Creasey muses. It is 9am and the young comic who earns his living at night is fresh-faced and surprisingly chipper.
鈥淚 just tell stories that I find funny and that I hope other people find funny,鈥� he added.
Creasey鈥檚 upcoming national tour of Rock God starts at the Adelaide Fringe Festival and comes hot off the heels of a brief stint in New York, where he opened for comedic icon Joan Rivers.
Things must have gone well as Rivers also invited Creasey to tour with her later in 2014, but his pre-booked commitments meant he had to politely turn down the opportunity.
Nonetheless, Creasey loved meeting Rivers.
鈥淪he鈥檚 actually the nicest person I鈥檝e ever met,鈥� he said.
His new show deals with what he wryly calls his 鈥渟ad, failed attempts at getting famous and becoming Australia鈥檚 next rock god.鈥�
The show also explores what a rock star means to different people, whether it鈥檚 the smiling barista at your local caf茅 who makes your day, or childhood inspirations from singers to sporting legends.
Creasey suggests Rock God continues the evolution of his style from the more traditionally structured stand-up routine of his earliest shows, to a more expansive, relaxed style of storytelling.
He gives a nod to the positive influence of his friend, touring partner and mentor Fiona O鈥橪oughlin.
鈥淚 gained so much inspiration from touring with her, she鈥檚 fantastic,鈥� he said.
With a cheeky grin he adds: 鈥淎t times when we were on the road, the roles would switch and I鈥檇 be the maternal figure telling her to go to bed while she鈥檇 want to stay up late and party.鈥�
This time of year is packed with comedy festivals, so it鈥檚 no surprise that afterwards Creasey will be heading to the Brisbane Powerhouse as part of the Brisbane Comedy Festival, before heading back to Melbourne for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival where he performs for nearly a month straight.
He keeps the momentum up for the Sydney Comedy Festival, and then a solo show in Perth.
Creasey鈥檚 flair for storytelling is also set to hit the small screen later this year with the release of an ABC documentary co-starring fellow comedian Rhys Nicholson.
With a booming career, future shows in development in both Australia and the USA, and an ambition to one day move to the latter and host his own talk show, a national tour like Rock God may not be so easy to schedule this time next year as his profile continues to expand.
