‘I鈥檓 A Rock Star Now’: Dolly Parton Inducted Into Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame
Dolly Parton further cemented her status as a musical legend when she was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday, November 5, 2022.聽
鈥淚鈥檓 a rock star now!鈥 said Parton in her acceptance speech.
It was an honour Parton had initially declined, despite having been eligible for inclusion for more than 30 years.聽
鈥淭his is a very special night for me,鈥 said Parton. 鈥淚鈥檓 sure a lot of you knew that back when they said they were gonna put me in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I didn鈥檛 really feel like I had done enough to deserve that. And I didn鈥檛 understand at the time that it鈥檚 about a little more than that.鈥澛
鈥淏ut I鈥檓 just honored and so proud to be here tonight. 鈥 When I always thought about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I thought that was just for people in rock 鈥榥鈥 roll!鈥
Parton Reconsiders Nomination
When the nominations were announced in March, Parton, in a statement, said, 鈥淓ven though I am extremely flattered and grateful to be nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I don鈥檛 feel that I have earned that right. I really do not want votes to be split because of me, so I must respectfully bow out.鈥
Parton reconsidered her stance and later accepted her nomination. “Of course I will accept it gracefully,” Parton said. “Thanks to everyone that voted for me and to everyone at the @rockhall. I will continue to work hard and try to live up to the honor.鈥
“From its inception, rock ‘n’ roll has had deep roots in rhythm & blues and country music,” Shauna Wilson the director of communications for the Rock Hall Foundation said in a statement at the time. “It is not defined by any one genre, rather a sound that moves youth culture. Dolly Parton鈥檚 music impacted a generation of young fans and influenced countless artists that followed.”
‘One Of The Greatest Storytellers Of Her Time’

Parton was introduced to the Hall of Fame stage by Pink who said, 鈥淭here are few finer songwriters, male or female, that have ever lived鈥 She鈥檚 one of the greatest storytellers of her time 鈥 of any time. She writes about things that others would prefer to be swept under the rug,鈥 and said Parton鈥檚 music 鈥渃an make you feel like God is listening and that help is right around the corner.鈥澛
Pink finished out her speech noting Parton 鈥渄idn鈥檛 just get the joke, she wrote it. And she doesn鈥檛 care if you鈥檙e laughing as long as you鈥檙e listening.鈥
Introducing a new song, 搁辞肠办颈苍鈥 she wrote especially for the event, Parton said, “If I’m going to go in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I’m going to have to earn it, And you thought I couldn’t rock & roll.鈥澛
Less than one month until the release of my greatest hits album, Diamonds & Rhinestones. To celebrate, I'm releasing a brand new "Jolene" lyric video. I hope you like it!馃槈

鈥淚 thought, well, if I鈥檓 gonna be in (it), I鈥檓 gonna have to do a rock album, because my husband of 56 years is a huge rock fan. And all through the house he has music louder than this going on at all times. He鈥檚 always said, 鈥榊ou should do a rock album.鈥 And I thought about it a few times, but timing is everything. And then when this all came up鈥 I thought, well, since I am gonna be in the (hall), I鈥檓 gonna write a song for tonight, which I鈥檓 gonna sing in a minute, kind of telling my story about how I felt about it.鈥溌
Parton, decked out in a black leather catsuit, armed with an electric guitar and backed by the Zac Brown Band, lit into her new song, written specifically to mark the momentous occasion.
Country鈥檚 in my veins / But since I heard the news, I ain鈥檛 never been the same鈥 / They done gone and put me in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Parton was inducted into the Hall of Fame along with Duran Duran, Carly Simon, Eurythmics, Lionel Richie, Eminem, and the duo of Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo.
Heavy metal band Judas Priest were honoured with a Musical Excellence Award and in their acceptance speech, out lead singer Rob Halford, said, 鈥淗i 鈥 I鈥檓 the gay guy in the band,鈥 eliciting a round of applause from the audience.聽
“You see, that is what heavy metal is all about. We call ourselves the heavy metal community which is all-inclusive, no matter what your sexual identity is, what you look like, the colour of your skin, the faith that you believe or don’t believe in. Everybody’s welcome.”
Los Angeles Times music journalist August Brown said that the sight of 鈥淩ob Halford, Brandi Carlile, Annie Lennox and Dolly Parton 鈥 in a black leather catsuit 鈥 trading verses on Jolene has to be a high watermark of queer culture. The adoring look on Halford鈥檚 face alone as he cuddled up to Parton was worth the five-and-a-half-hours of this ceremony.鈥
鈥淩ock 鈥榥鈥 roll doesn鈥檛 know boundaries,鈥 said Greg Harris, the chief executive of Rock Hall of Fame, prior to the event.聽
鈥淩ock 鈥榥鈥 roll is inclusive, rock 鈥榥鈥 roll is broad and as you can see from this year鈥檚 induction class, rock 鈥榥鈥 roll is incredibly diverse. It鈥檚 an attitude, a spirit. It鈥檚 always pushing the envelope. It鈥檚 the sound of every new generation defining itself and carrying itself forward. To pick up from Berry Gordy, it鈥檚 the sound of young America, but it鈥檚 also the sound that stays with us through our entire lives,鈥 Harris said.聽
