There is no way I can see that they can limit this to “traditional” religions. Even adherents of religions which aren’t recognised in Australia by the ATO will still be able to claim rights under this bill.

And there’s the loophole. Claim your own religion. If that’s somehow not good enough go with a fringe religion like the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, which is recognised and tax-exempt in the US and even in NZ but not in Australia.

(The history of the church of the FSM is it started as a protest against Christians teaching creationism rather than evolution in US high schools, it’s now an internationally recognised church, it’s very pro-science, pro-evidence and strongly opposes the Folau position on gay folks. It’s adherents call themselves Pastafarians,)

This bill, although a potentially serious issue, has the capacity to become a laughing stock depending on how creatively Aussies use this new-found freedom. I’d love to see some drag queens start a new church, the word ‘transsubstantiation’ could obviously fit into the name of it somewhere.

As a libertarian, I can tell you they are just as bad and if not worse as Labor, One Nation, Nationals and the Greens.
