Barry Humphries defends right to make anti-trans comments
Crossdressing comedian Barry Humphries has defended his right to make anti-trans comments.
Humphries鈥 name was earlier this month removed from the Melbourne International Comedy Festival鈥檚 top award over a series of against the community.
Speaking on the matter at a comedy question and answer session in London on Sunday night, he defended not being 鈥渘ice鈥 about LGBTI people, has reported.
鈥淐omedians aren鈥檛 always terribly nice,鈥 he said.
鈥淲e don鈥檛 have to be nice, do we. We鈥檙e not obliged to be nice, we鈥檙e generally pretty unsavoury.鈥
In 2016, Humphries called Caitlyn Jenner a 鈥渕utilated man鈥 and referred to transition as 鈥渟elf-mutilation鈥.
He later called being transgender 鈥渁 fashion鈥 and commented 鈥淗ow many different kinds of lavatory can you have? And it鈥檚 pretty evil when it鈥檚 preached to children by crazy teachers.鈥
He referred to calls for transphobia to be treated as a form of assault as 鈥渢errible ratbaggery鈥.
At Sunday night鈥檚 event, Humphries made a joke about marriage and gender, in telling a story about complaining to a director about wearing tights onstage.
鈥淗e said, your legs are good, according to my wife, and it was the old days鈥攈is wife was a woman,鈥 said Humphries.
The former Barry Award for the best show at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival is now known as the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Award.
