Volunteering for Red Ribbon Appeal is a chance to make history: ACON
ORGANISERS聽of this year鈥檚 ACON Red Ribbon Appeal are encouraging people to聽join in efforts to end HIV transmission in NSW by participating in the annual fundraising event.
Launched聽this week, the Ending HIV Red Ribbon Appeal will take place聽in the lead up to and on World AIDS Day.
ACON is聽looking for volunteers to help with the appeal鈥檚 street collection, which will take place in Sydney on Sunday, November 30 and on World AIDS Day itself on Monday, December 1.
Throughout November, donations can be made and Red Ribbon merchandise can be purchased or in participating shops and businesses.
ACON chief executive聽Nicolas Parkhill said the focus of the event continued to align with NSW鈥檚 new approach to eliminating HIV transmission by 2020, adding that this was now possible due to recent advances in HIV treatments and testing technologies.
鈥After 30 years of battling HIV/AIDS, the fact that we now have the capacity to end HIV transmission within 10 years is incredibly significant,” he said.
“This is especially so for the tens of thousands of individuals, family members and friends throughout Australia who have been affected by the virus.
鈥So this year, we鈥檙e asking people to join us and help make HIV history by getting involved in the Ending HIV Red Ribbon Appeal.”
Parkhill said that any form of assistance in the appeal, whether it be volunteering to sell red ribbons, or purchasing and wearing one, will help raise funds that go towards聽vital services to help end HIV transmission in the state.
鈥淵ou鈥檒l also be helping spread the word about how we can end HIV by testing more, treating early and staying safe,” he said.
鈥Now is the time for us to work together to free our community from HIV transmission.聽It鈥檚 history in the making and we can all be a part of that.”
