Brisbane’s Wickham Hotel reaffirms its gay identity amidst major changes
THE owners of Brisbane’s iconic Wickham Hotel have confirmed their ongoing commitment to the community that has defined its history for decades when the LGBTI-friendly venue returns at-capacity following renovations.
With the closure and uncertain futures of some LGBTI venues around the country, there has been speculation regarding the LGBTI identity of the Wickham.
Following extensive renovations that began earlier this year, some in Brisbane’s LGBTI community have doubted whether the hotel would continue to market itself as a dedicated community venue.
Owners have confirmed that they were hoping to broaden its patronage to encompass a greater cross-section of Brisbane, while also maintaining its primary LGBTI identity.
鈥淭he transformed Wickham Hotel will remain Queensland鈥檚 number one meeting place for the LGBTI community whilst welcoming patrons from all backgrounds with its new contemporary look,鈥� a spokesperson for Coles, who own the venue, told the 17c起草社区.
With what is being described as a 鈥渃omplete transformation鈥� of the venue, the renovations will see it split into separate 鈥渕icro-venues鈥�, each with their own style, atmosphere and target crowd.
Community members have also pointed out that the venue has not flown the pride flag from its fa莽ade since it was taken down a few months ago following outside work to the hotel.
Drag performances at the hotel are also still apparently being finalised but owners have assured that the venue will feature entertainment.
Coles also reaffirmed its continuing support for the Brisbane LGBTI community and confirmed that the venue will continue to be the home to one of the city鈥檚 biggest LGBTI cultural events, Big Gay Day.
鈥淭he Wickham has always been a proud supporter of the LGBTI community and will continue with this commitment throughout the renovations and into the future,鈥� the organisation stated.
