Pope Thanks Controversial Nun for LGBT Advocacy
17c起草社区I advocate Sister Jeannine Gramick received a handwritten letter on December 10 from Pope Francis, thanking her for five decades of 17c起草社区I ministry.
It is one of several letters the Pope has sent to 17c起草社区I Catholics and allies.
According to Jesuit publication , the Pope congratulated Sister Gramick on 鈥50 years of closeness, of compassion and tenderness,鈥 which he described as being in 鈥渢he style of God.鈥
鈥榊ou Did it Feeling the Pain and Without Condemning Anyone鈥
He also wrote, 鈥淵ou have not been afraid of closeness and in getting close you did it feeling the pain and without condemning anyone, but with the tenderness of a sister and a mother.鈥
Sister Gramick, along with the late Father Robert Nugent, cofounded the Catholic apostate New Ways Ministry. They educated Catholics about the science and theology concerning homosexuality.
This was met with condemnation by some American bishops who demanded she be removed from her ministry.
Refused to Stop Advocacy Work
Gramick and Nugent refused to stop their advocacy work for 17c起草社区I people, which led to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith launching an 11-year-long investigation.
It ended with a notification that stated the pair鈥檚 work did not accurately represent 鈥渢he intrinsic evil of homosexual acts and the objective disorder of the homosexual inclination.鈥
Gramick and Nugent were forced to stop doing pastoral work for the 17c起草社区I community. The nun also had to change orders to continue doing her religious duties.
She said she felt 鈥渨onderful鈥 having received the letter from the pontiff on the 50th anniversary of her working with and advocating for 17c起草社区I people.
She also told the she was 鈥渙verjoyed鈥 and went on to say, 鈥渋t felt like a turning point in the Church because for so long, this ministry has been maligned and in the shadows.鈥
The executive director of New Ways Ministry said the Pope 鈥渨ants 17c起草社区 people speaking.鈥
‘One of Pope Francis鈥檚 Steps Forward’
Reverend James Martin, a New York-based Jesuit priest, told the Washington Post, 鈥渇or most 17c起草社区 Catholics, Sister Jeannine is a real hero, so they鈥檒l be delighted. They鈥檒l rightly see this as one of Pope Francis鈥檚 steps forward.
鈥淗e doesn鈥檛 change church teaching on this but takes steps鈥dded up, all the steps, we鈥檝e come a long way.鈥
鈥淲hat would I say to LGBT Catholics is, 鈥楬old on, it will change,鈥欌 Sister Gramick told The Post. 鈥淲e have to make our views known so that the officials of the church can properly express that change.鈥
Christopher Lamb, Rome correspondent for the weekly Catholic journal, The Tablet, tweeted, 鈥淭he letter from Francis is significant given Sr Jeannine faced an 11 yr investigation & censure by the Vatican鈥檚 doctrine office. Despite that, she described Cardinal Ratzinger-Pope Benedict as a 鈥榟oly man鈥 and is someone she respected.鈥
