Some of the older readers will remember that just such a club existed in the 1990s on the North shore. Going by the name Helix, it met every Monday night at the Pickled Possum Winebar in Mosman and held all sorts of regular events such as cinema visits and bushwalks, and annual gatherings such as Xmas and Easter “orphans picnics”. Most of us were men who couldn’t find a home in the inner-city gay strips, and Helix gave us a profound sense of belonging, friendship and safety. It helped foster a much greater sense of acceptance in myself as a gay man. Sadly, it petered out in the 2000s. I’ve never found another club like it and would eagerly join Esperance if I still lived in Sydney.

Vale Helix. Long live Esperance.

We aim to create new, real-world connections and build on existing friendships – without the endless scrolling, swiping, and cyber scammers.
The next SilvaSocial takes place on 28th April upstairs at the Courthouse Hotel at Taylor Square and previous events have attracted over 60 men of all ages. More info at SilvaSocial.com
