Cory Bernardi’s Maiden Speech To SA Parliament Sparks Walkout
South Australian Greens MPs walked out of state parliament during One Nation leader Cory Bernardi鈥檚 maiden speech to the Legislative Council on Tuesday, after comments he made about transgender people, gender-affirming care and Welcome to Country ceremonies.
Bernardi, a former Liberal senator who retired from federal politics in 2020, was elected to the South Australian upper house at the March state election, where One Nation secured four lower house seats and three upper house positions.
During his speech, Bernardi criticised what he described as the 鈥渃reeping hand of socialism鈥 and said Australia鈥檚 鈥減olitical class鈥 had 鈥渟quandered our golden opportunities with false ideology and promises鈥.
鈥淧eople are sick of being fed a steady diet of tasteless vegan political tofu and being told that it鈥檚 tasty eye fillet, and really good for them,鈥 Bernardi said.
鈥淭hey want their country back and I want to give it back to them, starting right here in South Australia.鈥
Bernardi also mocked Welcome to Country ceremonies during the address.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 need to be welcomed to my own country and neither do the overwhelming majority of Australians,鈥 he said.
Greens MLCs Robert Simms and Melanie Selwood left the chamber after Bernardi turned to discussing transgender people and gender-affirming healthcare.
鈥淭he media are silent, while the government allows doctors to mutilate children in the name of gender-affirming care,鈥 Bernardi said.
鈥淭o me, it鈥檚 sheer madness that can be countered with a commonsense analogy.鈥
Bernardi also criticised communism during the speech, saying he refused to buy Cuban cigars.
鈥淚t鈥檚 my personal crusade, Mr President, to starve the communist regime of Cuba of any funds so they collapse and democracy can ring true,鈥 he said.
鈥淣ow I鈥檝e since learned that the Cuban cigar business has been bought by the communists in China, so I鈥檓 now bringing down two regimes as a personal crusade.鈥
The speech was attended by several conservative political figures, including Liberal senator Alex Antic and United Australia Party senator Ralph Babet.
Bernardi has previously attracted controversy for comments about 17c起草社区IA+ issues and same-sex marriage. Prior to the election Bernadi鈥檚 previous comments during the marriage equality debate surfaced once again, doubling聽down on comments stating that 鈥渞edefining marriage has seen a push for further redefinitions including lowering the age at which people can marry, multiple-partner marriages and even advocacy for the legalisation of bestiality.鈥
鈥淚 stand by [them] 100 per cent鈥 he said. I鈥檓 not apologising or retracting anything that I鈥檝e said. If you have a look at the redefinition of the Marriage Act, what鈥檚 happened since then, we鈥檝e gone down a complete spectrum, which was entirely denied would ever happen.鈥

I think what happened in SA is appalling, and protesting is the least they could do. These matters have been settled, and it is time to move on and make it the norm, and those who still oppose them, living in the past, should have no place in our governments.
United Nations Envoy Professor Tony Waugh.
Ruxxy, just what is your proof that there are a lot of One nation supporters in the gay community? Yes. Pauline, being the consumare political opportunist has one of her senior staff who is knowne to be gay, has, at least one, MP who is BUT there is no getting away from the fact, and the LGBTIQ+ Community should not forget that whenever there is an election, that her policies are anti-LGBTIQ+, that she and her party are Extremists. Those of my generartion can well remember what happened in 1932 when an extremist political party, the NSDAP, what the world came to know as the Nazi Party, came to power and set about the extermination of over 13 million in their Konzentrationslagern of which about One Million were Homosexuals, 6.4 million members of the Jewish religion and another 6.3million innocent men, women, children many of whom were Romanies, Political Opponents, those in Mental Hospitals, including Hitler signing off on the killing of his own neice.
Any LGBTIQ+ members who voted for Pauline probably did so because they just wanted to protest against the two majors, the ALP and Coalition both of whom have just One Policy: To Stay in, or Win, Power. They care about nothing else.
Ciory Bernardi is only repeating his words when he was the leader of his now failed Australian Conservative Party. Interestingly the Murdoch Press in SA repeatedly told us that Bernardi was a “Former Federal Liberal Senator”. This was a blatant and deliberate lie by the Adelaide Advertiser because though he was elected to the Federal Senate using Liberal Party Funds he deserted and formed the Australian Conservative Party which, like all Extremist political parties, including the once-great, now Extremist Right-wing neo-fascist Liberal Party, end up being rejected by the Voters.
Our Parliaments are full of Political Opportunists, people who want to get their hands on the massive salaries, the almost Cost Free Lifestyle and they don’t care which political party they attach themselves to, at least for a while. As we have seennin the past One nation Owner, would-be Australiabn Dictator, Pauline Hanson, has backed an number of candidates, gotten them elected only to have them dump her and her neo-fascist policies. and then for the next few years they remain in our Parliaments, doing nothing, acheiving nothing for Australia, being underworked and overpaid and ending up being millionaires which was theur aim from the outset.
Cory Bernardi, like so many of his ilk expose themselves as at the very least, a contradiction, at the worst hypocrites. They speak of libertarianism, freedom of speech, of thought and opinion, of being free. Bernardi referenced Communism and Socialism in his speech. Communism has been established with authoritarianism and totalitarianism. It seems these values he holds, only apply to those that he agrees with. I live by the mantra 鈥 Live and let live鈥, the scary thing is, his views appear to be gaining traction.
Sadly Cory is too stupid to realise he’s not doing the Party any good by repeating his idiotic nonsense – because there ARE a lot of One Nation supporters in the gay community, contrary to widespread belief.
