‘No room for that kind of affection’: Pope Francis says gay priests should quit

Pope Francis has said that “homosexuality is fashionable” and that there is “no room for that kind of affection” in the clergy in a new interview.

The interview was published in Italy as part of a new book titled聽The Strength of Vocation,听.

In the interview, Pope Francis says that “homosexuality is a very serious issue” which has him “concerned”.

“The issue of homosexuality is a very serious issue that must be adequately discerned from the beginning with the candidates,” he said, addressing the idea of LGBTI people becoming priests.

“In our societies it even seems that homosexuality is fashionable and that mentality, in some way, also influences the life of the church.

“This is something I am concerned about, because perhaps at one time it did not receive much attention.”

The Church officially barred gay people from entering the priesthood over a decade ago, and the current Catechism of the Catholic Church states that 鈥渉omosexual acts are intrinsically disordered鈥 and that 鈥渦nder no circumstances can they be approved鈥.

While the Pope’s messaging on LGBTI people has been marginally more accepting, he earlier this year聽聽and said聽.

“It can happen that at the time perhaps they didn鈥檛 exhibit [that they were gay], but later on it comes out,鈥 the Pope continues in the interview.

鈥淚n consecrated and priestly life, there鈥檚 no room for that kind of affection. Therefore, the church recommends that people with that kind of ingrained tendency should not be accepted into the ministry or consecrated life.

鈥淭he ministry or the consecrated life is not his place.鈥

The pontiff said that the Church should “urge homosexual priests, and men and women religious, to live celibacy with integrity, and above all, that they be impeccably responsible, trying to never scandalise either their communities or the faithful holy people of God.”

“It鈥檚 better for them to leave the ministry or the consecrated life rather than to live a double life,” he said.

  1. I’m old enough to remember the days when a Catholic girl who’d worked out she was lesbian but didn’t want to disappoint their family would go to a convent. Having Jesus as a husband wasn’t too demanding.

Now that seems lost. The Pope seems to me to have confirmed that a young Catholic woman in a similar situation these days should just quit the church and marry their lovely girlfriend. Is that what he intended? Coz that’s all I’m hearing.
