Anti-LGBTI group claims marriage equality discriminates against lesbians
The Australian Family Association is campaigning for lesbians to vote no on marriage equality.
The group has joined others in attempting to derail the marriage equality debate by labelling it an issue of 鈥渢ransgender marriage鈥, according to .
鈥淲hat does transgender marriage mean for women and lesbians?鈥 asks the Australian Family Association鈥檚 new .
鈥淭wo men identifying as women and in a relationship can be legally married and be recognised as being in a lesbian marriage for the purposes of accessing lesbian only organisations, events and lesbian exclusive spaces.
鈥淚s this the sort of 鈥榚quality鈥 Australians want to impose on women and lesbians?鈥
The group鈥檚 bizarre claims are the latest transphobic rhetoric from various anti鈥搈arriage equality campaigners.
Mark Latham also recently drew criticism for a series of tweets attacking 鈥渢ransgender marriage鈥.
Tiernan Brady, executive director of the Equality Campaign, said, 鈥淭he next few weeks must be a campaign of respectful conversations, not angry debates, because this is about real people鈥檚 lives and their dignity.
鈥淟esbian and gay people are our family members, friends, neighbours and workmates and we would ask all who take part in our national conversation to remember that.鈥

This is so stupid. It seems based on the idea that a “lesbian marriage” is somehow a legally different construct to another marriage (two guys, a straight couple etc) and that men will now be able to register themselves as a married lesbian couple.
All of that is total bullshit. The rest of their case collapses accordingly. It’s clutching-at-straws desperation.
Marriage will be between two people. It won’t affect who can sign up to a lesbian-only organisation.
