New app shows safe public restroom access for trans* people
A NEW聽app聽for聽iPhone and Android devices that seeks safe public restroom access for trans*, intersex, and gender non-conforming individuals is now available in Australia.
According to the app’s , Refuge was created so聽users could search for restrooms by proximity to a search location, add new restroom listings, as well as comment and rate existing listings.
Its聽aim is to聽create a community focused not only on finding existing safe restroom access but also looking forward and participating in restroom advocacy for trans*, intersex, and gender non-conforming聽people.
After starting up in the聽US, the app is now starting to make its way down under, with a handful of bathrooms displayed in Australia.
At the time of publishing, Sydney had聽no recognised safe restroom access listed for the trans* community, with Newcastle being the closest.
On the other hand, Melbourne lists eight around the city (see below), Brisbane has four, Townsville one, Perth three and Adelaide two.
The app is free and so is the ability to list a safe restroom.
Its creators聽state that although聽every trans* person should have the right to use the restroom they want to, they聽still face verbal and physical harassment, which is why they felt the need to provide this service.

I have noticed in the past week that in six states in the US (namely North Dakota, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Florida, Texas and Tennessee) “anti-trans* bathroom bills” have been introduced. There is a huge conservative Christian fundamentalists backlash and trans* people are the new target practice!
