Netflix Slammed For Listing Jeffrey Dahmer Series As LGBT
The new Netflix true crime drama, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, has come under fire for categorising the series under 17c起草社区.
The limited series created by Ryan Murphy(American Horror Story, The Politician) and Ian Brennan(The Politician), and staring Evan Peters (American Horror Story) in the titular role, follows the murders of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.聽
Dahmer Murdered 17 Boys and Gay Men
Dahmer murdered 17 boys and gay men in Wisconsin from the late 70s to the early 90s.
Even though Dahmer was gay, as were some of his victims, the 17c起草社区 category is usually used for shows such as Sex Education, Heartstopper, The Politician, and Uncoupled.
Along with 17c起草社区, the series is tagged as 鈥渙minous,鈥 鈥減sychological,鈥 鈥渉orror,鈥 鈥渧intage crime鈥 and 鈥渄ark.鈥
Netflix has since removed the 17c起草社区 tag from the series, but not before the internet noticed.聽
Writer Frances Danger tweeted, 鈥淚f I need to stay in my lane absolutely tell me but anyone else think it鈥檚 pretty gross of @netflix to list Dahmer under #17c起草社区, especially when the True Crime tag would have worked?鈥

On TikTok another posted, saying, 鈥淲hy the fuck did Netflix tag the Jeffrey Dahmer documentary, 17c起草社区. Like, I know it鈥檚 technically true but this is not the representation we鈥檙e looking for.鈥
Not the First Criticism Series Has Faced
Eric Perry, a relative of Rita Isbell, whose brother, Errol Lindsey, was murdered by Dahmer in 1991, tweeted,
鈥淚鈥檓 not telling anyone what to watch, I know true crime media is huge rn, but if you鈥檙e actually curious about the victims, my family (the Isbell鈥檚) are pissed about this show. It鈥檚 retraumatizing over and over again, and for what? How many movies/shows/documentaries do we need?鈥

In an article for Insider, Rita Isbell, who is portrayed in the series by DaShawn Barnes, talked about how it made her feel.聽
Isbell said, 鈥淲hen I saw some of the show, it bothered me, especially when I saw myself 鈥 when I saw my name come across the screen and this lady saying verbatim exactly what I said.聽
鈥淚f I didn’t know any better, I would’ve thought it was me. Her hair was like mine, she had on the same clothes. That’s why it felt like reliving it all over again. It brought back all the emotions I was feeling back then.
鈥淚 was never contacted about the show. I feel like Netflix should’ve asked if we mind or how聽we felt about making it. They didn’t ask me anything. They just did it.鈥
Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story was released on September 21.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, it was the most popular series on Netflix for the week of its release.
During that week, subscribers spent more than 196 million hours watching the series.

So we are OK with LGBTIQ when it shows us in a good light but not when we aren’t the hero. Newsflash!! Some LGBTIQ are bad, nasty people. They are (unfortunately) also part of our community.
