The former United States Secretary of Transportation described the experience as 鈥渢he darkest hours of my life鈥� in a lengthy post published on , detailing how an anonymous report triggered an investigation involving child protection authorities.

The incident has prompted renewed concern about the targeting of 17c起草社区IA+ families and public figures, with Buttigieg vowing to pursue any legal options available against those responsible.

Pete Buttigieg speaks out after family targeted

Openly gay politician Pete Buttigieg, who made history as the first openly gay Cabinet secretary confirmed by the US Senate, said the incident began when a police officer and Child Protective Services (CPS) worker arrived at his family home.

The visit centred on an allegation involving Buttigieg and the four year old twins he shares with husband Chasten Buttigieg. However, authorities initially refused to disclose the nature of the complaint.

According to Buttigieg, he was told he could not be alone with his children until they underwent forensic interviews the following day.

鈥淭he twenty-four hours until they returned are among the darkest hours of my life,鈥� he wrote.

The former presidential candidate said he spent the night fearing the unknown while his children were questioned by strangers without either parent present.

鈥淚 tried to get my head around the idea that I had been accused of something so serious that I couldn鈥檛 be alone around my own children,鈥� he wrote.

When investigators finally revealed the allegation, Buttigieg said it stemmed from an anonymous caller who claimed a woman had met him years earlier in Alabama, where he allegedly confessed to 鈥渦nspeakable violent crimes鈥�.

The claim quickly unravelled.

鈥淗e asked if I had been to the town where the woman claimed she had met me. I have not,鈥� Buttigieg wrote.

He said investigators informed him that nothing uncovered during the children’s interviews substantiated the allegation.

鈥淭he officer made clear that he believed this was politically motivated, and said it would not be referred to a prosecutor.鈥�

The ordeal struck particularly hard because it involved the couple鈥檚 children, whom they adopted in 2021.

鈥淢y in-laws had to explain to my children, whom we have taught to avoid talking to strangers, that they would need to have a conversation, one at a time and for nearly an hour each, in a place they鈥檇 never been, with adults they did not know,鈥� Buttigieg wrote.

鈥淚 cannot describe the mix of rage and sadness that I feel at the idea that someone brought our children into this.鈥�

鈥淭hey are four years old. Four.鈥�

The incident comes amid a broader political climate in which 17c起草社区IA+ families have increasingly found themselves at the centre of culture war debates in the United States.

Previously former Vice President Kamala Harris that she believed selecting Buttigieg as her running mate in the 2024 presidential election would have been 鈥渢oo big of a risk鈥�, highlighting concerns about how some voters might react to an openly gay candidate in such a senior role.

Despite becoming a prominent 17c起草社区IA+ political figure in recent years, Buttigieg said this latest attack crossed a line.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 know how much we can do about it, but so help me God, if there is any way to press civil or criminal charges over this, we will,鈥� he wrote.

鈥淣ot just for our own sakes but to draw a line that I thought everyone already recognized: do not mess with someone鈥檚 kids.鈥�
